Title: A Global Village: Striving to Survive

Hits
222

Although global village term is closely connected with terms of globalization and globalism, it has its own distinctive features which are not common for all three concepts. While globalization mostly does relate to political and economic events throughout the world, global village infringes social, cultural and national aspects. According to the encyclopedia being a citizen of a global village means living in one community created by information technologies and mass media. Indeed, modern information technologies have developed human interaction facilities so far that we can watch and hear what is happening now at the other side of the world; give help for people suffering from hurricane or tsunami a thousand miles far form our homes; study at the foreign university without leaving our houses etc. At the same time there are so many arguments which confirm a global village is just an elusion and will never become a reality.

There are still millions of humans who lack not only internet or mass media access but daily suffer from absence of medical treatment, food, clean drinking water, electricity, housing and sanitation. These social groups would definitely not join the global village celebration and they would considerably argue its benefits for all world citizens. So, who can survive in global village society?
Looking at national and international policies of developed countries it is evident that global village survivors are those who are interested in enrichment by means of developing and undeveloped countries' manipulation and exploitation of environments, resources and wealth to drive the economies of western economies. Global village community is those who benefit from cheap workforce, buying cheap lands and resources, outsourcing and selling network technologies to the countries which are not able to develop and provide them to their citizens. Common and unified culture can be only that one which concentrates wealth, power and war force. Those who do not have access to these human 'achievements' and 'benefits' are being excluded from global village community like weak animals who should be killed or left for dyeing.

Consumerism could be viewed as one of the synonyms for the global village: if you can buy a good car, house, toothpaste or ticket to exotic islands you are a good citizen of the global world. One could argue: we have many humane and helpful international organizations such as UN which make much contribution into the world society development. Nobody can negate that 11 September tragedy and the US reaction to it was completely accepted by UN according to the US foreign policy. It was evident for everybody which society the UN supports: weak and poor do not and will not have access to the global village community.

Humanists are much closer now to raise the question: Does ALL world society celebrate and need the global village?
