Just weeks after Days of Our Lives’ most popular couple Brandon Beemer (Shawn Douglas-Brady) and Martha Madison (Belle Black) had been axed from the series, executives at NBC once again made a decision to fire out people. This time, they are letting go of the entire writing team. Despite the fact that the WGA strike is expected to end soon because so much progress had been made on the negotiations, the writers all received news last February 1 that their services are no longer needed by the long-time running daytime drama.



Terminated from the 41-year-old soap are Emmy-Award winner and head writer Hogan Sheffer, and staffers Tom Casiello, Frederick Johnson, Meg Kelly, Gordon Rayfield, Judy Tate, Judith Donato, Renee Godelia and Richard Backus.

On his personal webpage, Casiello shared his sentiments about the incident. He believes that the behind-the-scenes chaos is responsible for the mass lay-off. He thinks that the inner workings of the show, the secret cabals and the back alley strike deals are to be blamed. "I could potentially try to analyze the whole situation, try and find out how a writing team that started out the year doing strong [in the ratings], then ended up in LAST PLACE [due to dictates from the higher-ups] then somehow managed to come back and end the year in 4th place in Households and 1st place in the 18 - 24 demographic were all summarily kicked out at once, " he wrote.

Dana Higley, who returned to Days of Our Lives during the strike, is rumored to be the next head writer of the show. Higley was part of Days for 19 years before writing for One Life to Live in 2004, but ABC ended her contract last year. Once the Writers Guild of America strike is over, Higley will officially lead a new creative team for the show.
